Do you use real eggs?

Yes, I use large chicken eggs for the products available on the website. I am also experimenting with a number of other types of eggs such as quail, dove, rhea and ostrich; However these variations are available only at craft shows and even then are in quite limited quantities.

Are the eggshells fragile?

Yes, they are real eggshells and are therefore fragile, and just like an object made of glass or clay need to be handled with care. However, they are sturdier than fresh or hardcooked eggs because they no longer have a heavy interior.

Are the eggshells coated with any substance?

The eggshells have been coated with a satin polyacrylic coating to protect the decoration from damage and to give the eggshell a slight shine.

If I order one of your items, such as the 3-egg nest, will the eggs I receive look exactly like the ones shown in the picture?

The eggs shown in the pictures on the product pages are representative samples of the eggs I create. The availability of a certain leaf depends on the time of year. I will substitute beautiful eggs if the ones shown are not available. You will not be disappointed.

Each egg is handcrafted and no two eggs, even with the same leaf on, are alike. The dyeing process combined with the character of the leaf used to create the impression on the egg makes for interesting variations in leaf impression and background color. Each egg I consider worthy of sale is beautiful and I will do my best to ensure you are completely satisfied with your purchase. If you are purchasing a nest with several eggs in, I will assemble a pleasing combination. If you have a particular leaf request please specify that on the order form or check for availibility by email first.

Can I request a particular leaf pattern on an egg?

Please email me with your request and I will do my best to fulfill it. Please remember I create the eggs in Maryland and my leaf selection is largely limited to plants available in this area as well as the time of year. For example, tree leaves, such as gingko and oak are available mainly in the spring, when they are still small and emerging. Please allow 6-8 weeks for creation and delivery of any special requests.

What colors are the eggs available in?

The eggs are currently available in various shades of brown. This color is derived from onion skins and ranges from a medium to quite dark warm brown.

Will the eggs be the same color as the ones shown?

I will do my best to provide eggs that are as attractive and endearing as those shown here. Due to the inherent variability in the natural dye process it is often impossible to match the colors precisely. (But it does make the outcome much more interesting!) If you have a particular preference please let me know and I will try to match it.

Where do you sell your eggs locally?

Woodland Eggs are available at the Delaplaine Center for Visual Arts Education. Please check the Retail Shops page of the website for further details.

I also sell the eggs at selected craft shows in and around Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia. The response to the eggs at these shows has been overwhelmingly positive. Many people have never seen this form of egg decoration before and they find it enchanting and irresistably rustic. I have many repeat customers who return to buy eggs as gifts for friends who have seen and enthusiastically admired them in the customer's home. The eggs are visually very stunning and the photographs really do not do them justice.

How do you ship the eggs?

I ship the eggs using the USPS Priority Mail Service. Please allow 4-6 weeks from the time the order is placed until it is received. Overseas shipping is possible. Please email me with the details so I can provide accurate shipping and handling charges.

Many people are interested in mailing the eggs as gifts to friends and relations, but are concerned about them breaking in transit. Please be assured that the eggs are very carefully packed for shipping. I have mailed many eggs within the continental United States and to Europe, and have had only 1 egg break. If a breakage should occur, I will happily send a replacement.
